Fungal Skin Infection
Fungal skin infection is a common problem seen in many people (including children and adults) caused by the overgrowth of fungi that are normally present in the human system. There are simple causes behind fungal infections like the use of strong antibiotics.
Our skin contains a protein called keratin which helps fungal infections to feed and thrive. In combination with the antibiotics that sometimes destroy helpful bacteria present in our metabolism in addition to harmful bacteria, keratin helps fungal skin infection to thrive and grow on the skin.
Fungal Skin Infection: Causes and Contagion Prevention
Another likely cause of fungal skin infection is immune system problems. Hence, very young and very old individuals, AIDS patients, diabetes patients and individuals receiving chemotherapy or steroid treatments are also prone to fungal infection due to the weakness of their auto-immune system.
Fungus thrives in damp areas, so it is very important to keep the skin clean and dry at all times (in other words, abiding by good hygiene rules) to prevent fungal infection from growing and spreading. And as fungal skin infection is contagious, it is also important to take the necessary precautions – like washing after getting in contact with other people – to prevent contagion. Extra care is recommended in public areas that are prone to spreading such infections like gyms or swimming pools.
Fungal Skin Infection Types and Treatment
Fungal skin infection can manifest itself in various forms like ringworms on various parts of the body, thrushes, athlete’s foot, etc. As most of these are local skin infections that affect a certain area, most can be treated with topical creams, lotions or ointments and over the counter solutions that do not require prescription. On the other hand, if the fungal skin infection is caused by a more serious factor, your doctor may prescribe a stronger antifungal medication that will combat these causes to cure the condition. This actually applies to all skin conditions caused by fungal infection, including treatment for tinea versicolor.
